Playing DVD Movies

When I got the Beta 2 DVDs first I did a quick clean install of the x64 version on my desktop. I quickly inserted a DVD movie (American Pie: The Wedding) and when Media Player 11 popped up I was able to watch the movie.
Later I installed the x86 version on a Gateway M275 Convertible notebook and when I insert a DVD movie I get the FBI warning but after that a box pops up saying: "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a problem occurred with digital copyright protection."
Any ideas about what's going on?

I had the same problem. I reported it as feedback. For some reason WMP 11 in Vista 32 bit (the only one I've used), at least in the 5456 build, can only play non-copy protected DVD's.
One way to get DVD's to play is to install Slysoft's AnyDVD. The latest version is compatible with Vista, and since it removes the copy protection WMP 11 will then play the DVD's fine.
Another way, which just avoids WMP 11, is to use PowerDVD. I've successfully used versions 6 and 7. They turn off Aero during use and Windows warns of compatibility issues, but they work. If you buy it, you've got to give the registration exe administrator rights in its compatibility tab in its properties. I found it by right clicking the Cyberlink registration shortcut and in properties clicking open folder (formally Find Target).
Or, The DVD player in Nero 6 Ultra Edition, Nero Showtime, also works.
Or for a free alternative there is VLC Media Player. That comes with its own DVD player codec so you're all set.
By the way, once you install something like PowerDVD you'll get its menu of audio options in WMP 11's DVD properties tab by clicking advanced. But without AnyDVD installed it still won't play normal DVD's.

I have to disagree with your assessment of WMP11. I have used it on Win XP with no troubles at all. Once I installed Vista Beta 2 then I got the error "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a problem occurred with digital copyright protection" So it has to be something with vista and not WMP 11. Does anyone have any other ideas? "Eck" wrote:

SFC, I have a feeling you are correct, On my main machine, i did have vista beta 2 installed and it play dvds reasonable well (high CPU usages and no MPEG 2 hardware accellation) with no issues on WMP11 and the MS decoder other than accessing the audio codec in the dvd menu to set SPDIF out.
I removed it from my main PC since i rarly booted into vista. I put vista on my laptop instead and when i tried the dvd playback i got the same issues you all had about the copy protection. Powerdvd 7 was slow as hell but worked) and VLC worked fine though. Only issues with WMP11.

This is just my experience (as I mentioned in the original post). Vista (64 bit) installation on my desktop played a DVD movie while the laptop installation (32 bit) comes up with the digital rights problem.

Any ideas about what's going on? I don't always get that far before the DRM problem crops up.

Funny thing is the sound is playing and sometimes there is a picture under the error box.
Non-copy protected files play fine.

Hey, things are a bit different in 5472. My visualizations are working with my mp3's, but I haven't gotten to installing Quicktime and RealPlayer yet so I don't know if they cause that problem or not.
As far as DVD's, they no longer have the DRM error and do play. But they don't have any audio. I just get an occasional pop like it's trying to play the audio. As before, PowerDVD plays them fine. But before, even WMP 11 would play non-copy protected DVD's with the audio. Now it'll play 'em all, but with no audio.
I tried playing with the XP DVD Decoder Check program. Switching the default DVD codec had no effect on WMP 11. It uses its own no matter what I set as the system default. And, once I played a DVD the Cyberlink menus that had been in the advanced options in WMP's DVD option tab no longer appear.
So things are still not right, but it's obvious they're working on it since things changed between the builds. -- Dennis Asus A7V880/Epox 8KRAIPRO AthonXP3200+/Sempron3300+ Crucial 2x512MB ATI Radeon x850PRO/Gigabyte Nvidia 6600GT Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro/Audigy 2 ZS Platinum
